How to Keep Your Rabbits Healthy

How to Keep Your Rabbits Healthy

on

Rabbits are social, intelligent, and curious animals that make wonderful pets—but they are not a simple first pet for children. They require proper housing, nutrition, exercise, and mental stimulation to thrive.

Note: Rabbits cannot be kept as pets in Queensland.

  1. Rabbits Should Have Companions Rabbits are social creatures and should be kept in compatible pairs. Bonding takes patience but greatly improves their quality of life. Neutering is important to prevent unwanted litters.

2. Proper Housing is EssentialA hutch is not a permanent home. Rabbits need space to run, jump, and express natural behaviors.

  • Minimum size for two rabbits: 3m x 1.5m x 1m
  • Include a burrow or hiding area with clean bedding
  • Protect from predators, rain, flies, and mosquitoes
  • Indoor rabbits can be cage-free with safe areas and can even be toilet-trained

3. Exercise and Mental StimulationRabbits need daily exercise and activities to stay healthy and happy.

  • Provide running space, toys, digging areas, and supervised outdoor play
  • Spend dedicated time grooming and interacting with your rabbits every day

4. Proper DietRabbits are herbivores and need constant chewing to maintain healthy teeth.

  • Grass or hay: 80% of the diet
  • Leafy greens and vegetables: 15%, e.g., spinach, broccoli, celery
  • High-quality pellets: max 5% of diet
  • Treats: small amounts of carrots or root vegetables

A balanced diet prevents dental and digestive problems.

SummaryRabbits are intelligent, playful, and rewarding pets. Understanding their social, dietary, and exercise needs ensures a happy, healthy life for your furry companions.
